Starting in the late 1890s an area bound by South 47th Street and 51th Street along Armour Avenue (now known as Federal Street) in Chicago became the destination of hundreds of Italians from a small town 95 miles South East of Naples called Sassano.   Nicola di Brizzi, Francesco Cavallone, his father-in-law Michele Libretti and his brother Vincenzo Cavallone were a few of the first from Sassano to migrate to this area of Chicago between 1893 and 1898.   Though they were not the first Italians to settle in the Grand Boulevard community.  Around 1885 a few Italian families, the Santoro, Gangone and Lettiere from Teggiano, arrived and settled in the Armour Ave/Federal Street area before those from Sassano.  Assumption BVM marriage records revealed that that Cono Stavola (29 Mar 1860 - 21 Feb 1947) appears to be the first Sassanesi to arrive in Chicago.  Cono married Maria Policastro on 12 Feb 1893.  Stavola, whose surname eventually became Stobble, settled on 30th and Wells Street roughly two miles north of the Federal Street enclave.

By the 1940 Census, many of the houses on Federal Street between 47th and 50th were owned by Sassanesi.  Though many began as junk dealers, eventually they owned businesses, many, grocery merchants, club & saloon owners, restaurateurs, streets & sanitation workers and more.  Many understood the value of real estate not only purchasing their homes but investing as well.  They had a dream to better their lives and those of their families from the poverty of Southern Italy after unification.

They adopted the Riciglianesi parish, Santa Maria Incoronata catholic church, on Alexander Street and Wentworth Avenue (now known as St. Theresa Chinese Catholic Church in Chinatown).   Most of the marriages and baptisms were performed at Santa Maria Incoronata or the sassanesi returned to Sassano to have the sacraments performed there.

In the Fall of 2018 I came across Peter Barbella's "The Sassano Project" - an absolute treasure of genealogical material.  Since then we have become good friends and he invited me to help index the San Giovanni Evangelista church baptism, marriage and death records going back to 1644 as well as the Sassano civil birth, marriage and death records going back to 1809 along with Pasquale Cirullo.  Peter's work has made it possible for those with Sassano roots trace their ancestors, in some cases, back to 9th & 10th great grandparents.

Though not exhaustive, here is a list of original Sassanesi couples that found Federal Street in Chicago home between 1893 and 1959 before the Chicago Housing Authority dislocated the Italians and African Americans from their homes to build the Robert Taylor Homes. Click on the black banner topics at the top of the web page to be directed to additional resources filled with details of these Sassanesi and their descendants.  The "In Memory of" link above contains loved ones that are no longer with us, if there was a known obituary it will be linked to thier name.

Though the focus here is primarily the Chicago, Illinois; Hartford, Connecticut and New York City (New Jersey) metropolitan areas, where the majority of the Sassanesi settled,  I am more than happy to assist sassanesi in other areas of the country as well as those with any Italian ancestry.

-John A. Cavallone

From Sassano to 48th & Federal Street

The definitive Sassano to Chicago Genealogy Resource. Biancamano, Cavallone, Libretti, di Lisa, di Miele, di Novella, Marmo, Petrizzo, Ricciardone, Riccio and Stavola. These are just some of the families that left the small south Italian town of Sassano between 1893 and 1925. Driven by the staggering poverty in Southern Italy which resulted from Italian Unification, they left their beautiful homeland and settled in Chicago, Illinois in a three block area on south Federal Street between 47th and 50th Street to begin a life with new opportunities and challenges. Documented is a 16-year genealogy study tracing family roots back to this Italian town to the mid-17th century.

Sassano Chicago - Chicago's Forgotten Italian Enclave

Sassano Chicago continues the in depth research into the lost Chicago Italian enclave in the Douglas/Grand Boulevard neighborhood. Who lived there. What was housing like in that neighborhood. Where did they move to after the Chicago Housing Authority removed them from the neighborhood they lived in for 40+ years. Eighty-five Italian families documented in this edition of my ongoing research of the Sassanesi of Chicago. Samples of Real Estate Torrens, Warranty Deeds, Probate Record, Immigration papers, Death Certificates, Grave Monuments and more.

"He has done a complete genealogical reconstruction of the hundreds of people who migrated from Sassone (Province of Salerno in the Campagna (Naples) Region) to Chicago in the period 1880s-1950s. They settled on Federal Street at about 4800 South---a neighborhood that was demolished in the 1950s to make way for the Robert Taylor Homes, the infamous parade of high-rise (public housing) apartments east of the new Dan Ryan Expressways. Cavallone has used all the tools---Italian church records, the Ellis Island data, the US Manuscript Census, Family Search resources, property tax transactions from Cook County, and photos to create extensive records on multi generations of the people of Sassano, many of whom ended up on the mid-South side of Chicago before disbursing further to the south and west when their community was displaced by “Urban Renewal.”

Cavallone has given us five big volumes of personal data on his subjects. It is a unique accomplishment. I know of no other project on Italian immigrants that is as thorough and ambitious as title. Many Sassano families can simply take the family trees in these books, add some pictures and family stories to create a detailed family history. Cavallone has given us a model of exhaustive genealogical scholarship for others to use to the point where no one will be lost or forgotten from the historic record.

These volumes should be in the homes of all the families mentioned in the family trees available in the books. Genealogists everywhere should study this work as a best-practice model and historians can learn how to use the methodology as a basic structure for their narratives and analysis of the past." - Dominic Candeloro
